My Sweet Tooth: Sandy’s Donuts

Sandy's Donuts Exterior

Gathering at Sandy’s Donuts has been a West Fargo tradition since 1983. I usually don’t eat donuts if they’re put in front of me — much less seek them out — but donuts from Sandy’s are the exception to the rule. I guess I’m officially a local now.

The little shop off of Main Avenue is comfortable and cozy, with a blazing fireplace. (Editor’s note — since this article was written, Sandy’s has added a downtown Fargo location and announced plans for a third spot in south Fargo coming in the summer of 2019.)

Sour Cream Donuts fr'om Sandy's Doughnuts

These Sour Cream donuts are my absolute favorite — dense, rich and covered with glaze, but somehow not too sweet. They’re perfect with coffee.

I’ve learned the hard way to order some for pick-up the day before, because they’re always gone by the time I roll up — usually at the freakishly late doughnut consuming hour of 11:00ish on a Saturday.

Blueberry Donuts from Sandy's Donuts

The Blueberry donuts are pretty fabulous too. These are more cake-like with just a hint of glaze. When I’m in the mood for chocolate, the Double Chocolate (shown below) is dense and delicious with an incredibly thick glaze.

I recommend ordering by the dozen — your friends will love you!

A dozen plain cake donuts is $8.88 and a box of assorted donuts (which will include a variety of glazed, raised and cake donuts) will cost you $10.68.

As you can tell, I’m kind of partial to their traditional donuts (anything with a hole in the middle) but they also serve great fancies — Long Johns, jelly filled Bismarks, fritters and deep-fried cinnamon rolls.

A box of a dozen fancies will set you back $11.88.

Delivery is available in the Fargo-Moorhead area for a fee — call the day before you need them for the best rate. And if you’re in a hurry, they have a drive-through available as well.

So now you have no excuse not to try them and let me know which ones are your favorites!
